About a month after the Battle of Coral Sea we decoded yet another plan to attack. Aboard the USS Hammann, we got the message from Admiral Chester Nimitz that the japs were planning to attack Midway. As fast as our engines could move us we hewaded towards Hawwaii. When we got near I hopped into yet another airplane and took off to the airfield at Midway. Once there I didn't see any Japs so I decided to wait for my carrier to get there. It didn't take long but when they got there I went aboard (text)
I guess that the Japs wanted to surprise us because no one knew where they could have been. My commander wanted me to lead a group of scouts to look for the enemy. So I suited up and flew the team and scanned the ocean for miles of this threat. A group of carriers and other ships waited about 30 miles away. They were planning on attacking up with a mass attack but I wasn't going to allow it. I gave General Nimitz a call and told him about the hideing of the Jap ships. He told me to go back and tell the otheres so we could attack them while they were still unprepared and the planes still on the ships (Navy 1).
So that's what I did and that's what we did. We attacked them with everything we had and they didn't have any planes in the air. Instead of them surpriseing us we did it to them.external image g17054t.jpg
We sent 15 bombers in and sunk the protective ring of boats around 4 aircraft carriers. Once the aircraft carriers were unprotected we walkied into our carriers and we launched an attack on them. When we attacked them a second time we destroyed 4 carriers, 250 planes and a cruiser. That was the turning point of the war. After all the carriers were destroyed we began to take over island after island. It was a plan to try to get closer to Japan. Midway was the turning point of the war (eye, 1).
